Tips for saving money on your electric bill – P3 Kill A Watt meter

CTBoogie asked:

Connecticut has some of the highest electricity rates in the country. My monthly electric bill is over $300. I talked to a few neighbors with similar houses and it seemed like my bill was higher that theirs. I had CL&P (Connecticut Light and Power company) come out to check my meter and everything was normal. The technician gave me some pamphlets with tips to reduce my bill. I took it a step further and decided to use an inexpensive meter to monitor some of my appliances to see what was using the most electricity. I put together this video to share what I am doing. The test meter in the video is the P3 KillAWatt meter.

Saving Money – Sun Oven Granola Bars

katzcradul asked:

Katzcradul’s electric bill is increasing by $63 next month! She demonstrates how to make granola bars in her Sun Oven…just one way to save on energy costs. Her family loves these bars, and she loves that there’s no additives or preservatives in them. They’re loaded with heart healthy fiber and with the addition of fruit and nuts…protein and vitamins too! Shhhhh! Don’t tell the kids. GRANOLA BARS 2 cups old fashioned oats (not quick oats) 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup wheat germ 1 cup whole wheat flour 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup oil (or 1/4 cup oil + 1/4 cup applesauce) 1/2 cup honey 1 egg 2 teaspoons vanilla 1/3 cup nuts, chopped 1/3 cup raisins, chopped Mix dry ingredients. Mix wet ingredients together and then stir into dry ingredients. Pat into pan that’s been greased or sprayed with a release agent. Bake in a sun oven that been preheated to at least 250 degrees. Bake until edges are just slightly brown. (Should not take more than about 50 minutes.) Bake in a traditional oven at 350 degree for 18-25 minutes Slice while still warm. When cooled, store in an airtight container, or vacuum seal in jars or bags. Variations: dehydrated apples with walnuts and cinnamon dried dates with pecans and grated orange zest dried apricots with sliced almonds (substitute almond extract for vanilla) dried cranberries with walnuts Other nice additions: coconut, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, peanut butter

2 Important Tips for Avoiding Reverse Mortgage Scams

Reverse mortgages are getting more and more popular as the economy and stock market suffer. A lot of people were depending on their money in the stock market to retire and when the stock market fell so dramatically in the past few years, a lot of people lost their retirement funds. These people now look to reverse mortgages to help them be able to live a comfortable retirement. With the increase of people seeking reverse mortgages, the number of scammers and frauds in the industry has also increased.

It is unfortunate that there are people who take advantage of senior homeowners, but if a homeowner knows what to look for when it comes to reverse mortgage scams they can be better prepared to avoid them and not get scammed out of any money. Here are two very important tips to remember when applying for a reverse mortgage so that you can avoid the many scams and fraud that is out there.

Any financial advisor that doesn’t enforce the fact that you need to seek independent counseling about your reverse mortgage first could be a scammer. It is required that every homeowner meet with an independent counselor before being approved for a reverse mortgage. This counselor provides the person with important information about the loan such as how much they are approved for as well as exactly how the repayment of the loan works. When a financial advisor doesn’t encourage you to get independent counseling they are most likely trying to take advantage of you in some way. They may try to fudge your numbers so that they get a percentage of your loan or they will tell you that you are eligible for a lesser amount on the loan and then they take off with the rest of the money. Always, go to an independent counselor which can be found through Housing and Urban development (HUD), which is the government agency that deals with reverse mortgages.

Another important tip for avoiding reverse mortgage fraud is to make sure that you never sign your loan papers unless they are completely to your liking and totally completed. There have been cases were a financial advisor has had homeowners sign the loan papers with the wrong loan amount or with no loan amount and did not fill them out with the correct information. What these scammers do is fill in the loan amount for more than what you want and then they take the extra money and you are left to pay it back. This can potentially cost you thousands of dollars.

It is very important that you take applying for a reverse mortgage very seriously and that you get all the free help you can through HUD. The more you know about these loans the more likely you will be able to recognize a scam and not get taken by it.
