Advice on choosing a contractor to do a several thousand dollar retaining wall repair/replace?
Benson asked:
I know to check license and insurance, etc. Servicemagic returned no results. And I hate that I have to just call names in the phone book on such a big expensive job, so I’m looking for tips to sort through my choices.

If you have total auto inn you take it to your body repaair shop of your choosing?
Karen O asked:
Our insurance company wants us to take our wrecked car to their “preferred” body shop. Do we need to use “theirs”, our can we get another estimate? Can we choose our own certified bodyshop?

Where do you do car repairs when the landlord says no?
joanna19f asked:
I consider myself a shade tree mechanic, one of those DIY guys. I also consider myself frugal (cheap) and don’t see the point of spending $350 on a brake job when I can do the majority of the work myself and spend only $100. I also have a project car that’s needing a paint job and some other “serious” work which I’d like to give some attention to. It is an outlet of sorts – getting dirty, using my hands, fixing things, an escape from the mundane office setting.

Due to circumstances I now live in an apartment complex, and they’re pretty strict about their “no mechanic work in the parking lot” policy. So now I have no place to do these things for my vehicle repair and maintenance.
What low-cost options are there for someone like me who wants to work on their car but can’t do it at home? I’m looking for something like an “Auto Hobby Shop”, but I couldn’t find one in my area (Miami, Florida). Any suggestions?

How to prevent problems with a transmission?
p p asked:
I am the type of female who has never looked under the hood of a car. At the same time I am very economical and frugal.
How does one PREVENT a Transmission from going out. I KNOW it costs a lot of money to rebuild or replace a transmission. I am in a manual transmission chevy cavalier coup at 94,000 miles. What can I do to prevent transmission failure besides make sure the fluid is refilled?
